TRAN VU DUC

Master's student, Computer Science, University of Melbourne

Research interest

My research interest lies in the adaptation of core language technologies for low-resource settings. Over hundreds of languages spoken around the world, the money and effort in NLP research are heavily skewed towards only a few, while the rest receive considerably less attention. This phenomenon further exacerbates the already alarming social inequality between countries, as technological breakthroughs are concentrated on just the majority languages, leaving languages spoken by smaller communities rather undeveloped. My research aims to address the current challenges in Vietnamese NLP research. One specific aspect I would explore is the tasks of constructing, completing and expanding large-scale knowledge bases (KB) from textual data. In the age where a plethora of data becomes available digitally, my goal is to kickstart downstream applications and research by extracting knowledge from those textual sources and organizing them into structured representations. Our government, businesses and researchers currently possess an unprecedented amount of raw text data; and it is imperative that techniques and methods are developed so that those data can be leveraged efficiently.

Huynh Nhu Thao

Master's student, Biological Sciences, Monash University

Research interest

My research interests include dermatological problems and the application of advanced biomaterials in transdermal delivery. In particular, I would like to take a deep dive into transdermal drug delivery, which, I believe, has the least side effects on human body and hence the most patient-friendly drug form. SINGAPORE

Nguyen Huynh Long Hung

Doctor of Engineering, Singapore Management University

Research interest

Sustainable finance recently has attracted great interest from industry, academia and governments. In September 2021, Vingroup published its first Sustainable Finance Framework with an emphasis on the utilization of green buildings, electric vehicles, and sustainable waste management. The group also pioneered in the sustainable financing market by consecutively closing two deals during Q4-2021: issuance of the world’s first exchangeable sustainable bond of US$425 million, and US$400 million loan to fund green and sustainable developments of its auto unit VinFast and other subsidiaries. As a relatively new area, sustainable finance has many intrinsic technical problems that have not been properly tackled yet, such as the gaps in ESG data value chain. My research interest focuses on the use of digital technologies, such as blockchain, IoT and data analytics to address these issues and foster the developments of sustainable finance.

Research interest

Applications of Analytics in Finance (mobile payment)
Other interests: Application of Analytics in Retail, & Healthcare.

I am a mathematics and numbers aficionado. Upon graduation from my university with a major in economics and business, I was determined to work in a field where I could apply miracles of mathematics into the business setting to solve real-world problems. As you might expect, I spent years working in tech start-ups where there are wealthy sources of data and data-driven innovations take place every day. My past working experience enabled me to understand clearly the enormous impact of technology on Vietnamese people’s lives and figure out the goal for my career. My career passion is in the mobile payment industry. Not only is the mobile payment service helping poor people increase their income or save their money but also potentially enhances the global presence of one country. Developing this field is working towards my dream. It is to narrow down the gap between the rich and poor in Vietnam and develop a Vietnamese payment brand that appears globally as Alipay does.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan

Master's student, IT in Business (Financial Technology & Analytics), Singapore Management University

Research interest

I have spent 4.5 years working in the Financial Services industry in Vietnam, with the focus on providing financial products, especially loan, for low to middle income population. I was haunted by the two questions from the very beginning of my career. One is Why the poor must pay higher price for financial products, and is there a way to make it cheaper for them? The other is How to give the right amount of money to the right person – who is worthy of the loan and capable of repaying. The more digitalization projects that I participated in, the more I understand that technology holds the key to answer both questions.

As a product manager, who integrate the “magical” technology into digital financial products that directly interacts with users on a daily basis, I have seen both the bright and the dark side of technology’s impacts on people’s lives. On the bright side, technology has empowered us to create cheap, convenient, and accessible financial products for the users, especially those in low-income segment, and thereby helping them to improve the quality of life and open the door to a better future. On the other side, technology also brings about new threats that we have never encountered before, for example, high-tech criminals make use of digital products to scam people out of money. Thus, it is my aspiration to create not only cheap but also secure financial products that can help the poor out of the poverty loop with the power of technology and financing.

UNITED KINGDOM

PHAM KHANH MY

Ph.D. student, Medical Sciences, University of Oxford

Research interest

I find it fascinating that life starts from a single cell, the most fundamental biological unit. What is even more remarkable is how much we have yet to learn after decades of research. There are countless mechanisms to maintain the integrity of a living being. My interest lies in identifying factors that orchestrate cell activities and intercellular communications under a pathological state. My future project will focus on molecular genetics in cancer. What causes a cell to become cancerous or an immune cell to become dysfunctional? What are the signature genes that distinguish diseased cells from healthy cells? These are some of the many questions that might give us insights into potential therapeutic targets and solutions for the current challenges in cancer treatment.

Future-forward, I envision intelligent systems that understand the world’s causality and facilitate optimized interventions for the betterment of society. To achieve that, I plan to dwell deeper into statistical modeling and mathematical algorithms for machine learning, focusing on causal inference and mathematical optimization. In addition, I speculate a future key role for NLP and Computer vision in reading the world beyond tabular datasets and will further explore their representation learning approaches.

Vu Tan Phat

Master's student, Bioengineering, University of California, Los Angeles

Research interest

My primary research interest entails the characterization and modification of functional scaffolding materials to foster a biocompatible and non-immunogenic environment for the recapitulation of damaged tissues in situ. Specifically, the tailoring of material properties such as porosity, mechanical strength, degradation rate, surface energy, and cytotoxicity at implantation sites has proven to be essential in regenerative medicine. Despite recent biomaterial engineering advances in property tunability and foreign body reaction control, clinical translation remains an obstacle. It is my endeavor to probe the effectiveness of such design in human physiological systems.

DUONG HANH HOA

Master's student, Data Science, New York University

Research interest

My interests lie in the intersection between data science and economics, finance, and business consulting. Specifically, how can data mining and anomaly detection be applied in securities fraud identification
and characterization? How can text mining and natural language processing capture the economic connotation of analysts’ views or the sentiment of product reviews? How would the increasing demand for data privacy affect existing and future business analyses? What role do cloud technologies play in enabling cost-effective and scalable data analyses?

Nguyen Xuan Khai

Master's student, Mechanical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University

Research interest

I am interested in motion which involves control, autonomy, and sustainability. My goal is to enable robotic systems to achieve greater safety, robustness, efficiency, and agility in uncertain environments. Recent advances in machine learning and available enhanced sensing and computing capabilities have sparked interest in learning and data-driven approaches. But, in safety-critical applications, the question of the reliability and explainability of these mysterious methods arises. Control theory and optimization (e.g., model predictive control) have always maintained their significance and trustworthiness by utilizing rigorous criteria and mathematical proofs to derive the solution. Thus, my research bridges ideas from control theory, machine learning, and optimization in a unified framework to develop practical answers to real-world problems in autonomous vehicles and robotics. I have worked on different control methods and leveraged them to augment reinforcement learning of dynamical systems. Technology is full of surprises and I am willing to explore new perspectives.
