LUONG NGUYEN DAC THUY

Ph.D. student, Biomedical Sciences, The University of Sydney

Research Interest

As a dermatologist, my research interest is skin cancer. Skin cancer is a large subject in Dermatology. Sunlight makes us more prone to the risk of skin cancer, but it can also occur on areas of your skin that are not ordinarily exposed to sunlight because of some other factors like HPV. Some of these cancers are difficult to diagnose, detrimental to people’s health, easily metastatic, and troublesome to primary healthcare. They need regular check-ups for timely treatment as therapeutic management is not always effective, especially in late states. However, more and more funding is being provided for research on the mechanism of skin cancer to find new treatments. With novel therapies, patients will not suffer from the side effects of the old ones and the most important thing is that the treatment efficacy and survival prognosis will be improved. These are the final aims of my research.

Education

  • Resident Doctor in Dermatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Master of Science in Dermatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City.

LE PHUC HOANG ANH

Ph.D. student, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Nanyang Technological University

Research Interest

From the story of my grandmother – who was late-diagnosed and had to withstand her Alzheimer’s paralysis for seven years, I remind myself daily to work diligently to achieve my career goal: Detering the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. During my undergraduate years, I have been investigating the molecular pathology of this disease to deduce a prominent biomarker for clinical screening and prognosis. However, with my PhD training, I seek opportunities that allow me to work on interventions that can rejoin disrupted neural connections. My proposal articulated the possibilities of integrating biomaterials with neural growth factors, which possibly induce axogenesis and suppress pro-inflammatory reactions in the spinal cord post-injury to support patients in regaining their motor functions. If an optimal cocktail of additives is fused with a compatible material, then rewiring fractured neurons is feasible. With this project as the groundwork, my long-term vision is to apply multidisciplinary techniques, focusing on biomaterials and proteomics, to induce self-regeneration in the central nervous system. I believe this approach can support patients with neurodegenerative diseases, considering previous studies confirmed the self-regeneration capacity in our brain.

NGUYEN NGOC DUY HUNG

Master's student, Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of California, San Diego

Research Interest

My research interests revolve around AI-based computer vision and its applications. To be more precise, I’m interested in dense prediction tasks like image segmentation and depth estimation, mostly because those are tasks with very expensive labelling costs (usually at per-pixel level) and so works outside of improving on benchmark datasets become more challenging (but interesting). In this regard, I would like to work towards a more seamless transition of those tasks to more practical situations where, for example, scarcity of data and latency requirements might be a matter of concern. In general, I’m proud of my research interests because I believe that they can bridge the huge but extant gap between research and practical AI and that by doing so, we can let AI exert even a larger and more positive influence on our lives.
