Nguyen Ngoc Trung

Ph.D. student in Battery, Faculty of Science, School of Chemistry, Monash University

Research interest

As energy is one of the global concerns in this century, my interest is in green ammonia production through the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) powered by renewable energy to replace the dependence on fossil fuels. Together with hydrogen fuel, ammonia is another promising energy carrier owing to its high energy density, safety, easy transportation, and storage. Ammonia-based fuels offer great potential for universal use. Moreover, ammonia plays a key role to reduce the carbon footprint’s effects by following the closed nitrogen cycle in the natural ecosystem. My ambition is to design electrocatalysts materials with superior activity and selectivity, then optimize step-by-step to make greener ammonia synthesis on an industrial scale. The nitrogen economy clearly has many advantages and potential to develop in the future.

Nguyen Phuong Khanh

Ph.D. student, Applied Biology (Cancer Biology), University of Melbourne

Research interest

To date, the outputs of cancer research have enabled the development of diagnosis and treatment of multiple cancer types. Nevertheless, cancer’s complexity, caveats in our technical methods as well as model systems are still hindering humans from finding an ultimate cure to cancer. While such a cure is not feasible at the moment, some facets of cancer such as non-autonomous regulations may open novel avenue into understanding tumour malignancy. On that account, I will employ a combination of molecular and cellular approaches on the fruit fly model to elucidate how malignancy is determined, and how changes in the metabolism circuitry are integrated into this process. Hence, the results will provide mechanistic insights into tumour progression, establishing a conceptual framework for the identification of therapeutic targets against cancer. In addition, the project will offer a quick and reproducible platform that can be employed to advise on suitable treatment strategies for cancer patients.

Dang Minh Quang

MSc student in Pharmacology, University of Oxford

Research interest

My research interest lies in the nexus between pharmacology and stem cell science. In particular, I’m interested in discovering how synthetic small molecules can augment stem cell-derived therapies. At the moment, there is much to be desired about the translational utility of stem cell therapies due to inadequate control over stem cells’ behaviours in vivo. Small molecules or engineering strategies might be employed in a combinatorial manner with regenerative therapies to modulate stem cell therapeutic properties, including immunomodulation, cytoprotection, and tissue regeneration. I intend to conduct translational research to improve the safety and efficacy of stem cell therapies, with a broader application being the treatment of lethal diseases that elicit immune dysregulation.

DPhil student in Computer Science, University of Oxford

Research interest

My research lies between fusing Theoretical Dynamical Control with advanced Artificial Intelligent (Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning), which enables real-world applications (Autonomous Vehicles, Intelligent Robots, and Smart Grid Energy Systems) that both verifiable, safe, and optimizing performance. I was always motivated and only desire to work with the explainable, verifiable AI, transferring the intelligence into vehicles, robots, autonomous systems. As many others believe and get over-fancy excited about what calls Artificial Intelligent, what remains a challenge is the reliability at deploying such models/frameworks in the real-world application. Since far from what machine learning model at online platform, the implementation in the automotive or robotics industry vitally needs accountability. Nowadays, for vehicles/robotics and autonomous systems control, the online solver is gradually applicable with the growth of the computational ability of sensing and computing devices. In the near future, next-generation vehicles, robots, and autonomous systems would very much able and definitely ought to employ such a method, with its great data collecting-streaming ability. The combination with Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning is a compelling research direction, and I am not afraid to open the scope of my research.

UNITED STATES

Dao Manh Tri

Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering, University of California, San Diego

Research interest

My primary objective is to conduct research that has practical implications for addressing Vietnam’s environmental problems, and sustainable energy lies at the heart of the different research topics that I have encountered. Vietnam is currently undergoing an energy transition that introduces both considerable economic opportunities and threats. Given the complex, multisector nature of this energy conundrum, I believe that only an approach that combines practical engineering and political-economic considerations would effectively facilitate Vietnam’s transition and capitalize on the global energy trend. Therefore, I aim to develop efficient, affordable, and scalable energy operating and planning solutions. I plan to work on various energy topics, including renewable energy resource mapping, energy system modeling, carbon economy regulation, and microgrid operations. I am also interested in the application of artificial intelligence in maintaining reliable, stable power operations on the macro scale. I have performed studies related to water treatment, plasma technology, climate change, and environmental impact assessment, and I hope to combine these efforts with my future research to form a complete picture for a sustainable economy for Vietnam. I am open to collaboration with scholars in diverse fields who wish to work toward the same goal.

I am honored to have received the Vingroup graduate scholarship, for I admire its mission to lead and advance the development of science and technology in Vietnam. Besides financial assistance, the scholarship provides its recipients with timely mental support during the challenging application process. While attaining a degree is only the first step in a candidate’s research career, this scholarship could serve as a benchmark and a compass for their future research endeavors. The Vingroup scholar network consists of brilliant individuals whose passion for science and technology will drive their future contribution to Vietnam’s growth. I look forward to working with them toward the fulfillment of the sustainable development goals in Vietnam.

My advice for aspiring candidates is as follows: Reach within yourself, and look for a drive that is unique to you. Then, realize the Why before thinking about the What and the How. Lastly, surround yourself with people who love you and support your vision.
